Need a cozy sugar free drink perfect for sipping on while snuggling under a blanket? This one’s for you!

It’s no secret that I love hot drinks, or just drinks in general! Sippers, chocolate milk and FP hot chocolate is my go-to for staying hydrated and curbing the munchies in between meals.
I find the biggest thing that helps me stay healthy, on plan, and with no cravings, is keeping well hydrated. If I don’t start my day with 32 oz. of water in some form of a sipper, it wouldn’t even feel right, lol.
This Spiced Orange Nog is a Deep S
I always keep my drinks in between meals fuel pull. This means they are low in fats and carbs, so I’m not getting extra calories or causing accidental crossover meals.
But sometimes you need a drink with more fats! Not only is this THM holiday inspired drink a S, it is a Deep S.
What is Deep S?
On the Trim Healthy Mama plan, S meals are the ones that contain healthy fats, in contrast to E meals that have healthy carbs. Sometimes we like to take regular S meals and take them a step further by making them Deep S.
Deep S meals have pure sources of fats like butter, coconut, red palm and olive oils. But they cut out any of the foods normally allowed in regular S that are higher in carbs. This means no dairy, no personal choice foods such as low carb wraps, and no starchier veggies like onions, brussels sprouts and tomatoes. [Read more about Deep S meals here.]
Even though dairy isn’t allowed in Deep S, you can still have butter and whey protein powder, since these really have no carbs.

Why would I want to have a Deep S meal?
Since Deep S meals are such pure forms of fat, they are much easier for your body to burn through then regular S meals with heavier fats that also contain carbs. They are also great for helping flush excess sugars out of your system if you have over indulged.
Although it is great to include Deep S meals regularly, they are an especially useful way to get back on track after eating off plan.
When should I have this hot nog?
Since this THM holiday drink recipe has more generous amounts of fats and protein, you would want to have it with a meal or as a snack. It wouldn’t be something you would drink in between meals.
In fact, if you included a whole scoop of collagen, it could make a stand alone breakfast. As much as I enjoy chewing my meals, every once in a while it is nice to have a lighter, easy to digest breakfast. This is especially true if you have had a big supper the night before.
Or if you are in a hurry in the morning, it would be super easy to whip up and bring along in a insulated mug.
And it would make a great afternoon snack to sip on while decorating for the holidays or baking up some holiday treats! Of course, you can drink it no matter what you are doing, lol.

This hot nog can be made completely dairy free!
The only ingredient in this recipe that has any trace amounts of dairy would be the whey protein powder. Some people that can’t have dairy can still include this in their diet. But if you can’t, it can easily be omitted. I have it in the recipe just for extra foam and creaminess.
Orange essential oil or extract?
I have two options here for giving this hot drink a fresh orange flavor. You can use 1-2 drops of food grade essential oil or orange extract.
Normally I feel orange essential oil gives a much more true flavor. But I have tried this recipe both ways, and honestly, it is just as delicious with orange extract!
Good news for all of you that don’t use essential oils!
One more tip
There is 1/8 of a teaspoon of glucomannan powder in this recipe. This thickens it up a little bit as nogs are typically a thicker drink. Glucomannan is also great for keeping you full.
But it is definitely an ingredient you can omit if you don’t have it!
