How many of you enjoy baked beans? Do you even know what cowboy beans are?
I didn’t until I developed this recipe and shared about it on Instagram. One lady told me that the name for dishes like this is cowboy beans!
I certainly can picture cowboys out west enjoying a meal like this after a day in the saddle. Mind you, I’m sure they would be using real bacon and ground beef rather than turkey bacon and ground turkey lol. And that would still be on plan, just a crossover!
The regular version of cowboy or baked beans also has some sugar. We don’t need that in our lives! So this recipe is completely sugar free, but still just as delicious. Even more delicious since you can enjoy it knowing it is nourishing your body without any added sugars.

Use whatever beans you have!
I use a canned six bean mix in this recipe to keep it simple and easy.
You could totally use dried beans that you have cooked at home, or any combo of canned dried beans that you have on hand if you don’t have the six bean mix and want to make this right away!
Is your turkey low fat?
Make sure you are using at least 96% lean ground turkey to keep this low fat for a Trim Healthy Mama E.
If you aren’t sure what percentage of fat your ground meat is, or if you are using ground beef, rinse your meat under hot water to get rid of the fat before adding to the other ingredients.
Up the veggie content!
Regular baked beans don’t have added veggies in them. However, I LOVE to add a bag of cauliflower rice to up the veggie content and make this dish a complete meal in itself! You don’t even notice a difference.
I’ve even added shredded zucchini when I didn’t have cauliflower rice. Make it your own!

What is a 400 ml can and a 540ml can?
Here in Canada, all our cans have ml (milliliter) measurements written on them. If your cans have something else, you can just convert the amount over! For reference 500ml is 2 cups.
